Renewing Your Energy Contract

You should start shopping for a new electricity plan a month or two before your current plan expires.  If you find a rate great deal you can lock it in before your current plan expires.  You can switch to a new provider and set the start date up to 60 days in the future to match your current expiration date.

Your provider will start contacting you to ask you to enroll in a new plan with them as your contract expiration date draws near.  You should compare the offer you receive with rates being offered by other companies before you accept the new deal.

Don’t make the mistake of letting your contract expire without getting on a new plan with them or another provider.  You might end up on a variable month-to-month plan and you will probably be paying a higher rate than you want.

Tips for Comparing Electric Companies in Alvarado

If you want to make sure you are getting the best energy plan for your situation, the most important thing you should do is to make sure you are comparing rates for the appropriate usage level.  Once you enroll in a plan, your real-world average electricity rate depends, in most cases, on the exact amount of kilowatt hours of electricity you use each billing month.

All electricity providers in Texas are required to publish their electricity rates at three benchmark usage levels.  This is mandated in the standard discloser documents required by the state.

If you are moving to an apartment, make sure to compare rates for 500 kWhs.  If you live in a house, you should be looking at the 1000 kWh or 2000 kWh rates depending on the size of your house.

If you don’t account for you typical electricity usage, you could pick the wrong plan.  The company with the cheapest electricity rate at 2000 kWhs is rarely the same company with the best rate for 500 kWh.

Sources of Alvarado Electricity

The most important single source of electricity in Alvarado is natural gas.  Natural gas power plants generate more than half of Texas electricity output.

Coal, nuclear, wind, solar and geothermal make up most of the remainder of electricity used in Alvarado.  Most of the wind electricity in Texas is generated by the wind turbines that have proliferated in the western plains of Texas.

The price of natural gas largely drives Alvarado, TX electricity rates.  Movements in the natural gas market can have a large impact on Texas electricity rates.

The cost structure of power generated by wind turbines is different than electricity created by traditional power plants.  The cost of generating wind power is largely realized up front.   This means that most of the expense happens early in the lifecycle of a project when the equipment is built and installed.  After that, the cost of maintenance and upkeep is negligible.  And wind, unlike natural gas or coal, is free.

This means that the cost of wind power is largely influence by technology improvements that have steadily brought down the cost of wind turbines while also making them more efficient at turning wind into electricity.   The wind industry has also benefited greatly from generous government subsidies.
