Why Do Alvin Electric Companies Run Credit Checks?

Alvin electric companies don’t own the electricity they sell.  They have to buy in off of the grid before selling it to you.  Power plants cost a lot of money to build and operate.  When electricity providers sell power to consumers, they must first buy this electricity from the owners of those capital assets.

Like most other ventures that makes money selling a product, electric companies in Alvin buy their product and resell this product on the retail market at a small profit on each kilowatt.

When a consumer fails to pay their light bill at month end, the company is not just out the electricity.  They lose the money they had to spend to buy it from the producers.

That’s why it’s so important to them to make sure the people they enroll in an electricity plan are likely pay their bills.   The credit check helps lower their default rate when it comes to people paying their bills.

The credit check is referred to as a soft credit check and doesn’t impact your credit score.  Depending on the result of the credit check, the company may require a customer to provide a deposit before they will turn on the lights.
