When Should I Prepare to Renew my Electricity Plan?

Don’t make the mistake of going off contract.  If the contract on your current plan expires, your provider will gladly keep you on as a customer.  But, usually, you will be transitioned to a monthly plan at a rate that is much higher than you before.  Don’t find yourself in a situation where you are suddenly paying more than you had been for the same electricity.

The best thing to do is to begin shopping for a new plan as early as 60 days prior to the end of your current contract.   With most providers you can enroll in a new plan with a start date as much as 60 days in the future.

If you find a rate that is better than what you are already paying you should consider enrolling in that plan.  That allows you to lock in that great price; even if the start date is a couple of months away.

For commercial electricity plans, you need to plan a bit further out.  Give us a call and we can discuss your options – especially if rates have moved higher.

Electricity Rates Have Moved Higher – What Should I Do?

Remember, Texas electricity rates go up and down a lot.  You may find that the whole market has moved higher and all of the rates being offered in by everyone are higher than your current contract.  If this happens you can be patient, wait, and watch the market until your current plan expiration date is a little closer to see if rates go down.

Keep in mind, though, that if electricity rates for the whole market have moved higher, your rate too will go higher once your current plan expires.  In this case you are still better off choosing from the cheapest plan currently available.  Otherwise, you could be paying even more once your current plan ends.

Del Rio Electricity Rates Can Be Confusing

Electricity providers in Del Rio are free to set their own electricity rates.  After all, that is what it means to have a competitive market.  But there is a lot more that goes into an electricity rate than you may realize.  Very few companies these days set their electricity rates as an all-in bundled rate.  Most often, the advertised rate is an average rate that factors in all of the various costs, fees, and tiered costs.  For this reason, there is usually a different rate for 1000 kWhs usage than there is for 2000 kWh usage; even within the same plan.

Here is an example from a typical plan you may find offered in Del Rio.  There are five cost components that go into the electricity rate calculation for this plan:

  • Energy Rate = 5.80 ¢ per kWh
  • Base Charge = $7.95 per month
  • TDU Electric Delivery Charge = $3.42 per month
  • TDU Electric Delivery Charge = 3.697 ¢ per kWh
  • Credit for Billing cycle for usage greater than 2000 kWh = $40 per month

These are the charges that make up the cost of your electric bill.  You will note that a couple of these charges are fixed charges ($7.95 per month and $3.42 per month).  These will not change each month regardless of how many or how few kWhs you use.  As a result of this, your average electricity rate will tend to be lower when you use more kWhs because that fixed cost is averages out across more kWhs.

One of the items is actually a credit rather than a cost.  Notice this credit applies as soon as you use 2000 kWh in a billing cycle.  This results in an average electricity rate that dips as soon as you hit 2000 kWh in usage.

The average electricity rates for this plan are:

  • 11.8¢/kWh @500 kWh
  • 10.6¢/kWh @1000 kWh
  • 8.1¢/kWh @2000 kWh
