Tips for Comparing Electric Companies in Freeport

Before you start comparing Freeport electricity rates, make sure you are comparing the right rates.  Our electricity rate comparison tool allows you to select your home size to see the appropriate rates for each plan.

Texas electricity plans are priced at three different benchmark usage levels intended to represent homes of 3 different sizes.

If you live in an apartment, you will want to make sure you are looking at the 500 kWh rates.  If you live in a home, you will want to look at either the 1000 kWh or 2000 kWh rates depending how many kWhs of electricity you use in a typical month.  Check your past bills if you are unsure.

If you don’t look at the appropriate rates when you are selecting the best plan for you it can cost you when your first light bill arrives.   The rate calculation formula for electricity plans are often finetuned to be cheapest at specific usage levels.

Sources of Freeport Electricity Rates

Freeport Electric companies get their power from a mixture of sources.  About half of the power generated in Texas comes from natural gas.  Natural gas has many benefits that make it the ideal source of power in Texas.

More natural gas is produced in Texas than anywhere else in the U.S.  This abundance has resulted in the price of natural gas declining over the past decade.

It’s easy to quickly bump output from power plants that burn natural gas to generate electricity.  This is important for maintaining the balance of available supply and demand on the state’s electrical grid at any given time.   An imbalance of supply and demand could cause the grid to become unstable and lead to problems including blackouts.

Wind energy has a lot of benefits, but it is not a predictable source of electricity.  Wind turbines can only generate electricity when the wind blows.  That notwithstanding, wind is a great source of clean renewable energy.  Texas has invested heavily in infrastructure to support the large and growing wind industry within its borders.

Why Do Freeport Electric Companies Run Credit Checks?

Electric companies in Freeport operate to make a profit.  This means They want to make sure they are going to be paid for the product they sell.  They run credit checks to help them determine the risk of default before enrolling someone in an energy plan.

Each company is free to make its own rules with regard to credit requirements (although there are some Texas PUC rules that require providers to waive deposits in under certain circumstances). If their credit thresholds are not met, they will require a deposit.  The deposit amount will be different depending on the credit score and the historical electricity usage for the address that will be receiving service.

Electricity providers still must pay the owners of the power plants for the electricity they sell to consumers.  If someone doesn’t pay their electric bill, the electric company takes a loss.

Freeport, Texas Trivia – We’re Not Just Talking Freeport Electricity Here

As the name suggests, this Texas city is near the water. More specifically, on the map it lies near the Gulf Coast about 3 miles from Brazosport and 56 miles from Houston. Last checked, the population for Freeport was 12,200 making it the 204th largest city in the state of Texas. It lies within Brazoria County and it was originally founded by the Freeport Sulphur Company in 1912. Once Dow Chemical Company built a plant in the area years later, the community really took off. To this day, Freeport is home to Dow’s largest manufacturing site in the 21st century. The port itself is ranked 26th in international tonnage, making the economy a very important place in the world’s commercial activity. Because the city is so close to the water, it is conducive to hurricanes: 9 of all the 24 reported natural disasters in the area were from hurricanes.

The most frequent jobs for the workforce are in Management positions, Transportation (truck drivers), Manufacturing, Production, and Construction. The female population largely works in Sales and Administration type positions. The highest paid jobs are in the Medical field and Transportation (due to the influx of shipments and port activity).

When Your Freeport Electricity Plan Contract Ends

You can start looking for a new residential electricity plan a couple of months before your current plan expires.  If you find a rate great rate go ahead and lock in.  You can switch to a new provider and set the start date up to 60 days in the future to match your current expiration date.

Your current provider will begin reaching out to you to ask you to sign up for a new plan with them as your contract expiration date gets closer.  You should compare the offer you receive with rates being offered by other companies before you accept the new deal.

Don’t just let the plan elapse without getting on a new plan with them or another provider.  You might end up on a variable month-to-month plan and you will probably be paying a higher rate than you want.

Business owners will want to start looking at options 90 days before their commercial electricity plan expires.
