We Make It Simple to Compare Electric Companies in Hewitt

One of the things that complicates electricity rate shopping in Hewitt is the complex ways plans are priced.  When you blend in monthly flat fees with per kWh fees with usage credits and penalties based on usage levels you end up with a plan whose average rate can swing substantially depending on how much power you use.

The discloser documents required by the Texas PUC for all electricity plans sold in Texas contain the average electricity rates based on a home that uses 500 kWh per month in electricity, or 1000 kWh or 2000 kWh.  Every plan has three different published average rates.

Electricity providers like to structure plans to have the best looking rate at a certain usage level while anyone who enrolls in the plan but uses less or more electricity than that may have a much higher average rate.

If you live in a house that uses closer to 1000 kWh per month for electricity on average, you should be looking at the 1000 kWh rates, not the 2000 kWh rates.

Should I Bother Reading My Electricity Plan EFL?

After you’ve found a plan that looks good, you should review the plan’s EFL (Electricity Facts Label) before completing the enrollment process.  This is a PUC mandated document that spells out for the consumer exactly what they should expect from their electricity plan.  It contains a breakdown of all the costs and fees that are a part of your electricity plan.

If there is a cancelation fee, it will be included in here.  You will also find a table that lists all the flat fees and pricing levels that go into determining the average electricity rate.

Pay particular attention to how the average rates are determined.  Some plans will include bill credits that kick in at certain usage levels to give the plan its most attractive average rate right at one of the benchmark usage levels.  But if your actual usage falls outside of a narrow range, you may find that your effective electricity rate is a lot higher.

Some companies use these tricks so that their plan compares well against other electricity companies when looking at the 2000 kWh or 1000 kWh levels.  But in the real world its impossible to use a specific amount of electricity over the course of a month.  Plans that use this tactic are unpredictable and rarely the bargain they appear to be.
