Tips for Comparing Electric Companies in Lancaster

The pricing structure for some electricity plans is simple and straight forward.  However, the pricing structure for many electricity plans can get pretty complicated.  Such plans can be priced with multiple components including plus per-kWh charges that may fluctuate depending on usage level on top of flat monthly charges.  Some plans also throw in credits that appear when you use above a certain amount of electricity but go away when you use an even higher amount.

Because of all this, the average electricity rate for a given plan can be substantially different at 500 kWh of monthly electricity usage than it is at 2000 kWh of monthly electricity usage.

If you live in an apartment or small townhome you need to make sure you are looking at the 500 kWh average electricity rates.  If you are looking at the 2000 kWh average electricity rates, you may find that what you thought was the best electricity plan is actually one of the worst if you don’t use enough electricity.

At the same time, if you live in a larger home, you should be comparing rates based on 2000 kWh of average electricity usage – not 1000 kWh or 500 kWh.

Where Does the Lancaster Electricity Mainly Come From?

Texas may be known for its oil industry, but natural gas is the fuel source that powers more electricity in Lancaster than any other source.  In fact, Texas is the biggest producer of natural gas in the country. Over a quarter of the country’s proven natural gas reserve are found here.

With so much natural gas under foot made more easily available with modern extraction techniques, natural gas is the preferred source of fuel to power Texas power plants from an economic standpoint.  Other sources of Lancaster electricity include coal, nuclear, wind, solar, and geothermal.

Texas produces more wind power than any other state by a large margin.   A recent multibillion dollar infrastructure project built high capacity power lines to send this electricity from west Texas where most of the wind turbines are installed to Lancaster and other parts of the state.

If renewable energy is important for you, there are several 100% green energy plans available to choose from in Texas.

Lancaster, Texas Is Booming

The city of Lancaster, Texas resides within Dallas County. Last checked, the population for the city was about 39,400 people total, making Lancaster the 85th largest city in the state. Population growth has been steady for a long period of time now, and it appears that it will only keep growing. On the map the city is in the northwestern part of the state, close to the cities of Hutchins, DeSoto, Red Oak, Oak Leaf, Ferris, and Dallas to name a few.

As history shows, Lancaster was one of the first settlements in Dallas County. The city was founded in 1852 by “A” Bledsoe. The man himself was from Lancaster, Kentucky, so that is where the name “Lancaster” is derived. And despite a drought that economically hurt the community for some time during the first years of Reconstruction, Lancaster picked itself up from its bootstraps and started developing commercially. This was done more easily when the Missouri-Kansas-Texas Railroad (MKT) train depot opened up in town in 1888. After that, the community stabilized a little more, gaining more citizens.

The economy currently is driven by the following enterprises: the Lancaster ISD, Walmart, BrassCraft Manufacturing, Oak Creek Homes, Cedar Valley College, City of Lancaster, and Swift Transportation to name some of the top employers in the local economy of Lancaster.
