Guide to Comparing Electricity Rates in McKinney, Texas

All electricity plans don’t fit all homes.  The first thing you need to do when comparing McKinney electricity rates with our comparison tool is make sure that you are looking at rates for the size of your home.  There is a setting on our plan results list that allows you to select your home size to ensure you are looking at the right rates.

There are three benchmark monthly electricity usage levels that every Texas electricity provider advertises rates for.  They are:

  • 2000 kWhs:  This is a usage level commensurate with a larger home.
  • 1000 kWhs:  A good monthly estimate for a smaller house
  • 500 kWhs:  This is apartment sized usage

Electricity rates can be very different between these levels.  If you aren’t comparing the appropriate one, you could end up choosing the wrong plan for your needs.

Moving to McKinney?

McKinney is the county seat of Collin County. Recent population estimates put McKinney as 17th in the state of Texas, with 181,330 people. Some notable landmarks in the city are Chestnut Square Historic Village, Collin County Historical Society and Museum, and the Pecan Grove Memorial Cemetery. On the map, McKinney is near Plano (12 miles) and Dallas (29 miles).

The biggest employers for McKinney are Raytheon–a defense contractor–Encore Wire Corporation, Torchmark Corporation, and the Medical Center of McKinney. The most common industries are in manufacturing and retail trade, and there are a lot of available jobs in the city. According to the data, unemployment is 3.4% which is considerably lower than the rest of the country. This of course means that a lot of the workforce are living productive, fulfilling lives.

Temperatures are average during the summer. And snowfall during the winter time is negligible. And like most Texan cities, watch out for tornadoes, as they are more likely to happen here.

In addition, the attainment of Bachelor’s degrees is more prevalent in McKinney than the rest of the state of Texas. And the most common Associate’s degrees are in Liberal Arts and General Studies. The Collin County Community College awards the most degrees per annum.

How Do Cancellation Fees Work?

One of the standard components of a Texas electricity contract is the cancellation fee.  Electricity providers structure their cancelation fees in one of two ways:

  • Per remaining month on the contract (perhaps $20 per month)
  • A flat early termination fee.  You would pay the whole fee even if you cancelled well in to the contract

These fees usually only apply when you want to switch to a new provider.  Not to moveouts.

McKinney No Deposit Electricity Plans

Rather than paying $200, $300, or more for a deposit, you may consider enrolling in a prepaid electricity plan.  These plans have become very popular in McKinney.  You can get your lights on with a very small amount out of packet (as little as $30).

Like a debit card, this money goes to your account balance and pays for your electricity.  As you use electricity, the cost is deducted from your account.  You can add money to your account at any time.  You don’t have to pay a single large light bill once a month and you don’t have to park a large deposit with the electric company where it does you no good.

For Prepaid Electricity Call 855-564-1181.

Electricity Plans For Apartments in McKinney

Apartments, of course, use less electricity than homes do.  Electricity rates for each plan will be different depending on how much power you use.  Make sure when you are shopping for apartment electricity you look at the 500 kWh rates.  Plans that have attractive rates for 1000 or 2000 kWhs may have terrible rates if you only use 500 kWh.  That’s why it’s critical that you select ‘Apartment’ for your home size when comparing plans on Vault Electricity.
