Melissa Electricity Rates – How Are They Calculated?

If you are like most people, you probably think that the electricity rate on your plan determines how much you will pay for your electricity.  The truth is really the other way around.  For most electricity plans, your actual electricity rate isn’t known until after your bill is calculated. That simple fact leads to a lot of confusion and sometimes dissatisfaction amount electricity consumers in Melissa

Electricity providers in Melissa publish electricity rates for each plan they sell based on three hypothetical usage levels.  They are 500 kWh, 1000 kWhs, and 2000 kWh.  The three rates are usually different.  And if you don’t use exactly one of those three amounts of electricity in a billing cycle, your electricity rate will be different still.

To understand how this happens you have to look at how Texas electricity rates are calculated.

This is a real example of a recent Melissa electricity plan.  It is typical of the plans sold in Texas.  Although, they can sometimes get more complicated than this one.

  • Energy Charge = $0.0486 per kWh
  • Monthly Service Fee = $9.95 per month (per billing cycle for usage less than 1000 kWh)
  • TDU Delivery Charge = $5.47 per month
  • TDU Delivery Charge = $0.040716 per kWh

You will notice four different fees.  The first TDU Delivery Charge is a flat monthly fee that isn’t dependent on how much power you use.   The Monthly Service Fee goes away if you use more than 999 kWhs.  These two fees have the effect of changing your effective electricity rate depending on how much power you use.

The disappearing monthly service fee causes the rate to drop by a penny at exactly the 1000 kWh level.   Remember, this is one of the benchmark rates that are used to compare electricity rates among providers.

Coincidence?  No.

Melissa, Texas – What You May Not Know

Kaufman, Texas is the county seat of Kaufman County with a population of 7,300 people in total. This makes it the 288th most populous city in the state. It lies in the northeast corner of Texas close to the major Texas cities of Mesquite (22 miles), Garland (29 miles) and Dallas (32 miles). The city was named after David S. Kaufman, who was an attorney and politician. Originally the name changed from Kingsboro around the year 1852. A couple of notable people from Kaufman are Ted Healy, who discovered The Three Stooges, as well as Stuart Spitzer, who is a member of the Texas House of Representatives. A camp nearby the city was also used as a German POW camp back during WWII.

For educational attainment in the city, about 77% of those over the age of 25 have completed high school. And about 13% of those same people have earned a Bachelor’s degree or higher. Biblical Studies is a common major for those in the Kaufman area because of its close proximity to Southwestern Christian College. Liberal Arts and Sciences is another common major, but mainly for those who only earn Associate’s degrees.

Why Do Melissa Electric Companies Run Credit Checks?

Electric companies in Texas are in the business of buying electricity of the grid at wholesale prices and reselling it to consumers.  In the process they take on pricing risk and allow more predicable pricing for the end user.  Since they are required to pay the power plants for the electricity they sell, they want to make sure they are going to get paid on the other end.

That’s where credit checks come in.  These types of credit check won’t negatively affect your credit score, but they will help the provider determine if they want to require a deposit.  A surprisingly high percentage of people who sign-up for an electricity plan are asked to pay a deposit.

It is up to each company to set its own credit thresholds.  So, if you are asked to pay a deposit with one provider, you may have better luck with another one.  If you are looking for a no credit check electricity electricity plan, prepaid electricity is your best bet.

Tips for Comparing Electric Companies in Melissa

You need to make sure that before you compare Melissa, TX electric companies, you make certain that you are looking at the correct rates.    There are three standard levels in which electricity rates in Melissa are priced.  The levels are based on how much electricity you use on average.  They are supposed to represent three different home sizes.

The usage levels are:

  • 2000 kWh: Large House
  • 1000 kWh: Small House
  • 500 kWh:  Apartment

Obviously, not every home fits neatly into one of these levels.  But this can at least give you a rough idea of what to expect from a particular energy plan based on how much electricity you typically use.   It’s important that when you are comparing electricity rates, you are looking at rates that correspond as closely as possible with your home size.  This will give you the best chance of having your real life electricity rate match the advertised rate
