When Should I Renew My Electricity Plan?

If you are shopping for electricity in Texas, the contract works in your favor.  A typical contract length is 12 months.  Although they be shorter and can range up to 36 months for residential electricity plans.  For commercial electricity they can go even longer.

If you are under a contract right now, your provider will probably contact you near the end of your term to offer you a chance to renew or switch to a new plan.  This is a perfect time to return to Vault Electricity and compare the new rate they are offering to rates and plans being offered by other providers in the market.

If you do find a better rate with another electric company, your best bet is to switch to a new provider.   You can sign up for a new plan up to two months ahead of the end date of your current contract as long as you set the start date for the new plan to coincide with the end date of your current plan. The new provider will take care of the switching for you.

If you are not in a contract, you are on a monthly plan.  Monthly plans tend to come with much higher rates. You don’t want to be on a monthly plan if you can help it.  If you have never shopped for cheaper electricity or switched providers, most likely, you are paying way more than you would be paying if you were under a 6 or 12 month plan.

It is located with the counties of Collin and Denton on the northeastern part of the map. Historically, the city gets its name from the fact that the crops grown in the city had yielded quite the financial haul when Prosper had just gotten its start as a community. Originally it was to be called, “Richland,” but that name was already taken, so Prosper came to be. Cotton was the most lucrative crop back then, and with the city’s proximity to the Saint Louis & San Francisco Railroad in 1902, it was soon to be one of the most prosperous cities. And to this day, this fact is still true.

The unemployment rate is very low when compared to the rest of the country. And although the cost of living is very high for the citizens of Prosper, the median household income is well above twice as much as the national and state average. The economy is very strong indeed.

Getting No Deposit Electricity In Prosper

If you meet certain conditions, you may be eligible for a waiver from the deposit requirement from your electricity provider.  Not a lot of people meet these conditions, however.

The quickest and easiest way to get no deposit electricity is to enroll in a prepaid electricity plan.  These plans have become very popular in Prosper because they don’t require a credit check and the cost to get started is minimal.   To get the power on, you can pay as little as $30 to prefund your account.  This money is used to pay for your electricity from day one.  It’s a lot cheaper than paying a few hundred dollars for a deposit. Even better, this money actually goes to pay for your electricity rather than setting with the electric company for a year or more doing nothing for you.

Tips for Comparing Electric Companies in Prosper

One of the complicating factors when it comes to shopping for electricity plans in Prosper is that the pricing structure of plans is often extremely complex.  To calculate an average electricity rate you must factor in monthly flat fees with per kWh usage fees, usage credits and penalties based on usage levels. The result is a plan whose average rate changes substantially depending on how much power is used in a given month.

The discloser documents required by the Texas PUC for all electricity plans sold in Texas lists the average electricity rates based on a home that uses 500 kWh per month in electricity, or 1000 kWh or 2000 kWh.  Every plan has three published average rates.

Electricity providers like to structure plans to have the most attractive rate at a particular usage level while anyone who enrolls in the plan but uses less or more electricity than that may have a much higher average rate.

If you live in a home that uses something like 1000 kWh per month for electricity on average, you should compare plans using the 1000 kWh rates, not the 2000 kWh rates.
