If You Don’t Compare Electricity Rates, You Are Overpaying

If you haven’t shopped electricity rates recently, you are almost certainly overpaying for electricity with your current provider.  With well over a dozen reputable electricity providers offering service in Commerce, chances are your current provider is offering you the lowest rate out there.

Competition is the key to reducing prices in any market.  The Texas energy market is the same way.
Electricity rates in Texas change a lot.  Providers are constantly jockeying for position at the top of our list of the cheapest rates.  The plans they offer are mostly 12 month plans.  Though other contract lengths between 3 months and 36 months are also available.

Once your plan expires, the company will usually offer to put you on another 12 month plan.   The rate on this 12 month plan may be the lowest rate available by any provider.  But it’s probably not.  That’s why you should compare this offer to other offers currently listed on Vault Electricity and be willing to switch providers if you find a lower rate.

If you decided not to sign up for a new plan with your current provider, they will gladly keep you on with month to month pricing.  This would be a mistake.  You will probably be paying more than you should.

Tips for Comparing Electric Plans in Commerce

One very important thing to be aware of when you compare electricity rates in Commerce is to make sure you are looking at the correct usage level for your home.  Almost any electricity plan you look at in Texas is going to have a different average electricity rate depending on exactly how many kWhs of electricity you use per month.

There are three standard levels in which energy plans in Texas are priced.  These are 500 kWh, 1000 kWh, and 2000 kWh.  All plans will show an average rate based on each these three usage levels.  In most cases, you would see that the 500 kHw level has the highest average electricity rate.  This is because the fixed elements of the plan’s pricing (such as flat monthly fees) are averaged out across fewer kWhs.  This results in a higher average rate at the smaller levels.  There are other aspects of plans pricing that can have the opposite effect, however.

When you compare electricity plans make sure you are looking at the usage rate that is closest to your home’s average usage.  Luckily, our electricity rate comparison tool allows you to select which usage level to compare.

About Commerce Electricity

A city in Hunt County, Commerce has a population of about 9,100 total people. It ranks 247th in most populous city in the state of Texas. On the map it is in Northeastern Texas, next to Campbell, Texas and Wolfe City. The nearest major cities are McKinney (43 miles away) and Garland (49 miles). Demographers have stated that Commerce is one of the smallest cities to have a college: Texas A&M University-Commerce. And the college has been there since 1894. Historically, as the name suggest, Commerce got its start with roots in commercial activity. The reason for its settlement was as a trading post and store. Once a railroad was sent through the small town for the purpose of establishing a supply line to Fort Worth, the economy began to thrive even more so. Eventually, William L. Mayo planted a university on the Commerce grounds and there it still sits to this day: the aforementioned Texas A&M University-Commerce.

The current top employers in the Commerce economy are Texas A&M, Walmart, Commerce ISD, Legacy Housing, City of Commerce, and the Ben E. Keith Company. Currently, the median household income is very low at $22,600. This low median household income has to do with the fact that the town consists of mainly college students who have yet to get jobs and who have not settled down and gotten married. The median age for the city is 23.7 years old, so it is a very young crowd indeed.
