When Should I Renew My Electricity Contract?

Start being on the lookout for a new electricity plan a couple of months before your current plan expires.  If you find a rate that is too good to pass up, you can enroll in a plan with a start date up to 60 days in the future with some providers.

Your current provider will begin emailing you or sending you letters asking you to sign up for a new plan.  You should compare the rates they are offering with rates being offered by other companies before you take them up on the offer.

You’ll want to avoid simply letting the plan elapse without getting on a new one.  You might end up on a variable month-to-month plan and you will likely end up paying a higher rate than you should.

Where Does Odessa Get Its Cheap Electricity?

Historically coal was the main source for generating electricity in Texas.  Today less than one fourth of the electricity consumed in Odessa and elsewhere in Texas is sourced from coal burning power plants.  Regulations, environmental concerns and cheaper alternatives have steadily eroded the use of coal as a source for generating electricity in Texas.

Natural gas now produces over half of all Odessa electricity.  Natural gas is abundant and close to home.   Texas is the largest producer of natural gas in the United States.  Almost every new fossil fuel power plant built in Texas over the past couple of decades has been natural gas fired.  The relatively low cost of natural gas has helped keep electricity prices down for the state of Texas over the past decade.

Wind energy is another major contributor to the electricity grid that provides power to Odessa.  Wind has now surpassed coal as the second largest single source of Texas electricity.  Technology and economies of scale have steadily brought down the price of wind generated electricity so that it is now competitive on price with more traditional power sources.

100% green energy plans are now popular in Odessa and such plans are often as cheap as the traditional alternatives.

Odessa, Texas — Looking Beyond Cheap Electricity Plans

Odessa has a population of about 117,000 in total. It is the seat of Ector County and the city has been hailed as one of the top-5 fastest growing cities in the U.S. Founded in 1881 next to the Texas and Pacific Railway, Odessa first functioned as an important location for cattle and water, alongside the railroad. It was later made officially a city by 1927; this was around the time that oil was discovered in the county, and as is characteristic of that discovery, the population exponentially grew as production increased.
Odessa, Texas is famous for the Kiss and Kill Murder in 1961. It has also been used for various movies and television shows. It is referenced and utilized in the film No Country for Old Men, as well as the football-centered drama, Friday Night Lights.

For stats on where it ranks for the ‘best places to lives,’ some of its drawbacks are a higher incidence of crime (about 24% higher than the national average), as well as a higher unemployment rate. But it is cheap to live in the city; both housing and transportation are cheap. Commute time is below the national average as well.

How are Odessa Electricity Rates Set?

Odessa electricity providers create their own energy plans.  Each plan consists of its own formula that determines how much you pay in a given billing cycle.   Your average electricity rate will be a result of how much you pay for your electricity divided by how many kWhs of power you use for the month.

This is why even with so called “fixed rate” electricity plans, your effective electricity rate will bounce around from month to month.  Depending on which provider and which plan you choose, your electric bill will have several line items that add together to give you your final amount due.

Here is an example of the cost structure of a typical Odessa electricity plan. It will illustrate how your costs effect your electricity rate rather than the other way around.

This plan has five pricing elements:

  • Energy Rate = 5.80 ¢ per kWh
  • Base Charge = $7.95 per month
  • TDU Electric Delivery Charge = $3.42 per month
  • TDU Electric Delivery Charge = 3.697 ¢ per kWh
  • Credit for Billing cycle for usage greater than 2000 kWh = $40 per month

Notice the mixture of fixed fees (such as the $7.95 base charge) and per kWh charges.  This effects the math in such a way that your effective electricity rate will be higher when you use less electricity and lower when you use more.

The wrinkle in this plan is the $40 bill credit that applies if you use 2000 kWh or more.  This makes the plan look way more attractive at 2000 kWh even though at 1999 kWh the average electricity rate is much higher.

Here are the effective electricity rates for this plan based on how much electricity you use for the month:

  • 11.8¢/kWh @500 kWh
  • 10.6¢/kWh @1000 kWh
  • 10.1¢/kWh @1999 kWh
  • 8.1¢/kWh @2000 kWh

That one extra kWh makes a big difference!

What Is the Cheapest Electricity Company in Odessa?

The cheapest electricity provider in Odessa is probably not who you think it is.  There are over a dozen electric companies that sell power in Odessa.  Many are household names with big advertising budgets.  Many others are smaller and compete by maintaining leaner operations and offering lower rates.

Since Texas is a power to choose state, these companies are free to set their electricity rates at whatever level they want.  This makes for a highly competitive environment.  Texas electricity rates change often.   Usually the cheapest electricity rate you will find in Odessa is offered by one of the lesser known names.

This is not always true, however.  Sometimes the larger brands will temporarily get more aggressive with pricing in order to win more business.

The point is, the market is always shuffling and the only way to know who has the best rate today is to compare current electricity rates.  At Vault Electricity, we monitor the electricity market in real time and keep rates and plan information up to date so that consumers always have the latest information at their fingertips in order to make an informed decision about their next electricity provider.
