PenTex Energy (Formerly Known as Cooke County Electric Cooperative)

The Cooke County Electric Cooperative changed its name to PenTex Energy in 2019 to help showcase that they now distribute electricity in 5 North Texas counties.  PenTex Energy has approximately 17,000 electricity customers, 87% of which are residential.

PenTex Energy produces less than 0.2% of the electricity it distributes.  Instead the electric company purchases electricity on the wholesale market, then marks up the prices as it distributes the electricity to their rural customers.  This is common business model for electric co-op companies in Texas, though it does mean their customers pay a higher electricity rate than those customers located in deregulated cities.
