Compare Texas electric companies in your area
When it comes to finding the best electric company in Texas, residents in the Lone Star State have options thanks to Power To Choose. Whether you are a Texas resident who’s shopping for a plan that fits within a specific budget or you’re searching for an electricity provider that offers environmentally friendly options, there are lots of good electric companies that serve Texas residents.
Plus, the average cost of electricity in this state is typically lower than the national average, which means that the best electricity rates in Texas may also be pretty affordable.¹
Whether you’re a resident of Houston, Dallas, Fort Worth, Arlington, Corpus Christi, Plano, or any other deregulated energy markets here in Texas, Vault Electricity will help you find the best electric company and the cheapest electricity rates.

Find the cheapest electric company
To find the cheapest electric company, simply enter your zip code above. You will then be taken to your city’s page. There you will find the electricity plans available in your area. The cheapest electricity rate will be listed first. You can scroll down to see all of the electric company offerings. Make sure you select the size of home you have.
If you have other criteria you are looking for in an electric company, you can filter for it. For example, if you want a plan that uses 100% renewable energy, use the “GREEN ENERGY” button to filter out the non-green energy plans. If you want to see the plans available by term length, use the drop-down menu to select the length of time you want to see.
The Best Electric Companies in Texas
4Change Energy has 10 years of experience as an electric company in Texas. They were founded with the goal of helping the local community, and they have certainly met that goal. Known as the “electric company with heart,” they donate 4% of their earnings to charity. When you begin new service with 4Change, you can choose which charity you wish to contribute to.
4Change has a great history of positive customer satisfaction. Without fail, they stand behind their 100% satisfaction guarantee. More than any other electric company, they go to great lengths to make sure their customers are happy with the service they receive.
Direct Energy
Direct Energy is one of the largest electric companies, with operations in all 50 states and in Canada.
Direct Energy takes an usual approach to their customer acquisition in Texas. At times, their rates are very competitive. But at other times, they purposefully price themselves out of the market. The periods of high rates can last for several months. They will then suddenly flip the switch again and drop their rates to entice new customers.
Direct has recently been purchasing competing electricity brands, as well as HVAC and electrical service companies.
Gexa Energy
Gexa Energy has taken plan diversification to a a whole new level. They have targeted-usage plans, tiered plans, 100% renewable energy plans, and flat rate plans. If there is a certain type of electricity plan you are looking for, Gexa will probably have several to choose from.
In case you get started with a plan that doesn’t work out for you, they have a 60-Day Happiness Guarantee. You can use that to switch to a different plan without having to pay a penalty.
TriEagle Energy
TriEagle Energy has been providing electricity to Texas consumers for more than a decade. As their customer satisfaction scores show, they know how to deliver what their customers are wanting.
TriEagle was one of the first electric companies to actively market smart thermostats to their clientele. The thermostats have helped the customers lessen their overall electricity usage. Lower electric bills means happy customers. Well done, TriEagle.
Green Mountain Energy
Green Mountain Energy has been in the Texas electricity marketplace for almost 20 years. As the only 100% green electric company operating in the state, GME is in a class of its own.
Founded in Vermont (The Green Mountain State, of course!), they relocated their headquarters to Austin, Texas in 2000. Since then, they have been a driving force in changing the way we go about using renewable energy in our daily lives.
Reliant Energy
Reliant Energy also has long-time ties to Texas. Before deregulation Reliant was the sole provider of electricity to Houston. Like TXU in Dallas, Reliant has the best name-recognition in the Houston area. Reliant wants to keep that status, so they have their advertising campaigns going full throttle. Now that they are owned by NRG, they have a larger budget to use for the publicity push. NRG is one of the largest electricity providers in North America, so their pockets are deep.
TXU Energy
TXU Energy is one of the oldest energy businesses in the state. For over 100 years, TXU has been providing electricity to Texas, so it’s no wonder they have one of the most recognized brand names in the industry.
Before Texans had the power to choose, TXU was the only electricity provider in the Dallas area. In fact, we occasionally come across people that think that is still the case.
TXU was the first electric company in the state to market an electricity plan that claimed to offer free electricity during the evening hours. The TXU Free Nights and Weekends Plan is still be touted in television ads. Initially, quite a few consumers gave it a shot. Interest in the product has waned in recent years.
Cirro Energy
Cirro Energy has been active in Texas ever since the state deregulated in 2002. Although they were purchased by NRG in 2014, they have been able to keep their brand separate from the fleet of other electric company brands NRG as acquired.
They have quite an assortment of plans. They offer terms from month-to-month to three years, and they have fixed and variable rate plans. Cirro also has bill credit plans, as well as 100% green energy plans.
Payless Power
Payless Power is a highly rated prepaid electric company. They have been offering no-deposit electricity in Texas for over ten years. They have plans to offer traditional post-paid electricity, but as of now they are strictly a prepaid electric company.
Their customers love them. More than any other electric company, Payless gives their customers many account-tracking tools. From your phone or computer, you can log in to your account and see how much electricity you have used and how much money is currently in your account. You can add money the same way, or through a number of physical locations.
Frontier Utilities
Frontier Utilities also has over ten years of experience in Texas. The way they have separated themselves from the other electric companies is by offerring plans with very narrow usage targets. Due to this strategy, Frontier has a large number of plans to choose from.
While these plans can work for a household with electricity usage that stays constant 12 months a year, not many families have such consistant usage numbers. The exceptions to that generalization are homes with very low usage (under 500 kWh per month), and homes that never use less than 2000 kWh. In these cases, the plans can be very beneficial.

Prepaid electric companies
An electricity company with a prepaid plan allows you to pay for your electricity use by the month. This “pay-as-you-go” program is ideal for customers that don’t want to commit to a lengthy service plan. It’s also a good choice for someone that prefers the flexibility of being able to switch to a different electricity provider when they want.

Frequently asked questions about electric companies in Texas
The best electricity provider in Texas is the one that offers you the best rate for your situation. All electricity in Texas comes from the same power plants and power lines regardless of which electricity provider you choose. If your power goes out, it’s the local utility such as Oncor or Centerpoint that restores your power.
Electric companies differentiate themselves based on price, customer service, and brand recognition. TXU and Reliant are two of the best known brands in Texas electricity. They have solid customer service. But they aren’t always the cheapest. For most consumers, price is the most important factor in choosing an electric company.
No one company is consistently the cheapest electricity provider in Texas. Electricity rates in Texas change often. The cheapest electricity provider in Dallas or Houston today may not be the cheapest tomorrow. As a consumer, it’s more important to find the electricity plan offered within your area that offers the cheapest rate for your home.
For example, Frontier Utilities may offer the cheapest plan for an apartment in Arlington that uses 500 kWh of electricity while TXU may offer the cheapest plan for a Houston area home that uses 2000 kWh of electricity per month. This is why it is important to shop for the best plan using up to the minute rate information.
Unlike other parts of the country, Texas does not have a default energy provider. In most of the state, consumers have a choice from dozens of electricity providers. In parts of the state not open to electric choice, electricity is provided by electric co-ops. Electric co-ops operate mainly in rural areas within Texas.
Among areas open to electric choice, TXU and Reliant Energy are the largest energy providers. This is because they have existed since long before Texas electricity was deregulated and enjoy significant brand recognition.
