How Vault picked the best Texas electricity companies
The Vault Score is a rating system developed by Vault Electricity to offer a clear, easy-to-understand summary of how different energy companies perform across a variety of key criteria. The score provides a snapshot of the company’s commitment to renewable energy, price predictability, quality of terms of service, Public Utility Commission (PUC) score, and community impact.
We first evaluate each company on these five criteria, assigning a score between 1 to 5 for each category. The maximum a company can achieve in each category is 5, thus the total maximum score a company can earn is 25.
To create a more user-friendly scoring system, we then convert these total scores onto a scale of 1 to 5 (with 5 being the best). Because all companies provide the same quality of electricity, we adjust this scale to have a minimum Vault Score of 3.5. This means that even companies with lower total scores still receive a minimum of 3.5 stars in our rating system.
The final Vault Score is calculated using a normalized transformation that maintains the relative differences between the original scores. This process ensures that higher performing companies still stand out, while every company receives a rating that reflects their efforts and performance in a positive light.
We believe the Vault Score provides a balanced, transparent, and easy-to-understand way for consumers to compare energy companies. We are committed to providing clear and comprehensive information to help you make the best decision for your energy needs.
Understanding Texas’s Power to Choose System
What’s a Texas Electricity Company?
In Texas, electricity supply involves three kinds of companies. The one you probably deal with most is the “Retail Electricity Provider” (or REP). They provide you with electricity plans, take care of your bill, and answer any questions you might have. There are two more unseen companies: the generators and the TDSPs, which make sure electricity safely and reliably reaches your home.
Electricity Generators in Texas
These guys are the builders and keepers of the power plants that supply electricity to the Texas grid. This power is then sold to the Retail Electricity Providers.
Transmission/Distribution Service Providers (TDSP)
A TDSP takes care of all the physical stuff, like meters, wires, poles, and cables that bring power from the generators to your home. They also read your meter and pass this info to your Retail Electricity Provider (REP).
Retail Electricity Providers (REP)
Retail Electricity Providers are your go-to for customer service, billing, and payments. They come up with different brands, plans, and products to suit your personal needs. They buy electricity from the generators and ensure that your bill reflects your exact electricity usage.
Who is ERCOT?
ERCOT, which stands for the Electric Reliability Council of Texas, is an organization that manages the electric grid and distributes electricity to more than 26 million Texas customers, which represents about 90% of the state’s electric load.

How to get the best electricity rate
As a Texan, finding the best energy rates and plans can seem like a daunting task. The Lone Star State’s deregulated energy market offers a wealth of options, and while that’s a major plus, it can also make the process a little overwhelming. However, with Vault Electricity on your side and a clear strategy in hand, you can navigate the electricity service scene like a pro. Let’s dive into the process:
Step 1: Prioritize
The first step in securing your ideal electricity rate and plan involves establishing your priorities. Are you after the lowest price per kilowatt-hour (kWh), a renewable energy plan, or a plan with no early termination fees? Here are some aspects you might consider:
- Price: If the lowest price per kWh is your top priority, you’ll want to find a plan that offers the best rates.
- Credit Score: If you have a low credit score, then you’ll want to find a provider who can offer a no-deposit plan.
- Contract Length: Are you looking for a long-term commitment with stable prices, or do you prefer a short-term or month-to-month plan with more flexibility?
- Green Energy: If sustainability is crucial to you, you might prefer an electricity plan sourced from renewable energy.
- Add-Ons: Some providers offer additional benefits, such as rewards programs or energy-saving solutions.
Step 2: Research
The next step is to conduct thorough research. Understanding the market and the options available to you is vital. Here’s what you need to know:
- Your Energy Usage: Knowing your energy consumption patterns can help you identify the right plan. Whether you’re a low, average, or high energy user impacts which rate will be the most cost-effective for you.
- Provider Reputation: Check their Vault Score for a complete evaluation of their service.
- Understanding the Electricity Facts Label (EFL): The EFL provides crucial information about the electricity plan, including price, contract term length, renewable energy percentage, and other essential details.
Step 3: Compare
The final step is to compare different plans and providers based on your priorities and research. Consider the following points:
- Rate Comparison: Compare electricity rates between different plans and providers. Be sure to consider all factors, including price per kWh, base charge, and any other fees.
- Plan Comparison: Evaluate different plan types, such as fixed-rate, variable-rate, and indexed-rate plans.
Benefits Comparison: Look at any additional benefits offered by each plan, such as customer service, online tools, rewards programs, and more.
