OhmConnect Products and Services
OhmConnect is a different kind of electric company in Texas. In addition to selling electricity plans, they use technology to accommodate a customer response program aimed to help electricity users reduce their demand during peak times on the electricity grid. The company notifies customers when the electricity grid is being strained by demand and encourages them to reduce their energy usage. This serves the duel purpose of reducing demand for power and saving money for their customers. Customers can also receive rewards for responding to the need to reduce the drain on the grid during peak times.
The company first began operations in California in 2014 and now seeks to bring it’s business model and technology to the Texas electricity market. In essence, OhmConnect can be seen as running a virtual power plant. This is because the ability to reduce load during times of high power need is essentially the same as adding more power to the grid during those times.
They are also registered to do business in Texas under the name PowerPass

Don Whaley is appointed as Ohmconnect President for Texas Region
A new electric company is paying people to reduce their electricity demand to reduce burden on the power grid.
What is demand response and how is Texas using it to stabilize the electricity grid?
Demand response is a technique power companies and grid operators can use to reduce the strain on the electricity grid during times of high demand for electricity. This typically happens during the summer when air conditioners and fans are on full blast and everyone needs power to keep their homes cool. To help combat these situations, many power companies offer incentives for consumers to use less energy at peak periods of time by either raising prices or cutting off their flow of power altogether. This is a unique approach to reducing electric bills that most people have probably not considered.
