Southwest Power & Light: Ratings & Reviews

Southwest Power & Light Products and Services

Southwest Power & Light is a Texas light company. They sell residential and commercial electricity plans everywhere in Texas where electric choice is allowed. They are owned and operated by Texpo Power LP. The parent company also owns several other retail electricity providers in Texas including Nova Electric Co, Rio Power & Light, Texpo Energy, and YEP.

They are based in Houston Texas and have been in operation since 2010. The plans they offer are fixed rate and variable. The company has stated that they are opposed to index rate plans that can leave customers with disastrously high energy bills in times when the spot market for electricity spikes. This is what happened during winter storm Uri in 2021.

Southwest Power supports the Arbor Day foundation through their Plant-A-Tree program. For every 1000 kWh of electricity used by their customers a tree is planted as part of there partnership.

A word about fixed rate electricity plans

In Texas, many competitive electricity companies offer fixed-rate electricity plans. These plans typically have a fixed rate for a term of one year, yet the company will continue to charge a customer’s bill monthly. In addition, customers can usually cancel their plan at any time by contacting the company or signing up for a new one. This will often involve a cancelation fee, however. So it is important to check the terms of your plan. Fixed-rate electricity plans have been around for decades and have been used as a way to encourage competition among electric companies.
