Interesting Information Nuggets on Clifton, Texas

This city resides in Galveston County, about 15 miles from the city of Galveston, Texas. Bacliff was established in 1910 to be a resort along the water with hotels, attractions, summer homes, and a pavilion that was built over the water. It was called Clifton-by-the-Sea at this point.

A hurricane in 1915 tore through the newly developed amenities and resort, which meant everything had to be rebuilt. Eventually in 1924 the pavilion and the original structures were restored to working order. A fire would later destroy the pavilion, as well as a hurricane in 1943, which put it out of commission indefinitely. After this, the post office had to have a shorter name for postal purposes because the name Clifton-by-the-Sea was too lengthy. The new named “Baycliff” was misspelled as “bacliff” and the rest is history. Currently, the population is about 8,600 total.

The economy is largely driven by Construction, Installation, Maintenance, Food Preparation, Farming and Fishing, Teaching, and Sales positions.

Bacliff’s climate is hotter on average than the national average during the Spring, Fall, and Winter months, and during the summer sits in the high average for temperature highs.
