One of the first known settlements in the area (besides the Native Americans who first lived in the area) was a European named Captain Robert Ainsworth in around 1855 or so. The city also had important functions in the Civil War because the lighthouse was guide the transport and troops who sailed on the Gulf. The lighthouse was crucial for safe travel. And in WWII, artillery was built in the Port.
