Which Power Company Delivers the Electricity to My Home?

The electric company who sends you your bill every month is not the company that delivers the electricity to your home.  That job in Texas is performed by the regional transmission & distribution utilities (TDU) .  In Portland this utility is Oncor.  Oncor is responsible for maintaining the poles and wires, responding to outages and doing whatever it takes to make sure your electricity gets to you.  It doesn’t matter who you choose as your light company, the TDU will deliver it.

The electric company you pay your bill to is called a retail electricity provider (REP) and it is responsible for purchasing power from the grid and selling it to you.  Your bill will include standard pass through fees from Oncor.  These fees are the same for everyone in the Oncor delivery area no matter what REP they use.

What this means is that electricity providers are competing on price alone.  They aren’t competing on quality or reliability of service since they don’t even deliver your electricity.
