San Angelo Electricity Rate – What is My Overall Electric Bill Comprised Of?
Electricity providers in San Angelo are largely allowed to price and structure their electricity plans however they want. This has led to great amount of diversity in the types of products available to San Angelo consumers. Electric companies are free to tailor offerings to specific types of customers with specific needs and specific electricity usage habits. Free nights and free weekend plans are great examples of this.
This can make things a bit challenging when you want to compare electricity rates across providers and plans. The idea of a bundled all-in rate where there is one price per kWh that applies to every kWh you use is almost none existent among Texas electricity providers.
The electricity rate for most plans is a moving target. It changes from month to month depending on how much power you use between billing cycles. This is because most plans are a mixture of flat fees, per kWh fees and, usage credits that only apply if you use above or below a specific amount of electricity for a month.
Her is an example of how a San Angelo electricity plan might be structured. These numbers are pulled from the EFL document of an actual plan recently sold in San Angelo.
- Energy Charge = $0.0486 per kWh
- Monthly Service Fee = $9.95 per month (per billing cycle for usage less than 1000 kWh)
- TDU Delivery Charge = $5.47 per month
- TDU Delivery Charge = $0.040716 per kWh
When you add all this together, you get an average rate of 11.2 cents for 500 kWh and 8.9 cents for 1000. The big difference between the two reflects the fact that the TDU Delivery Charge flat fee applies no matter how much electricity you use for the month. Also, the Monthly Service Fee goes away once you use at least 1000 kWh for the month.

Which Power Company in San Angelo Delivers the Electricity?
Deregulation of the Texas electricity market broke up existing monopolies in to separate entities with different responsibilities within the market.
The types of company that are most important to electricity consumers are the Retail Electricity Providers (REPs) and the Transmission Distribution Utilities (TDUs)
Your retail electricity provider is the company who sends you your bill every month. You are free to choose your retail electricity provider as long as your area isn’t part of an electric cooperative. REPs have names that people are familiar with such as TXU, Reliant, and Cirro Energy.
Retail electricity providers must compete with each other to get your business. Their job is to buy power from the wholesale electricity market and resell it to you while, hopefully, smoothing out the price volatility that is often found in the wholesale electricity market.
When they sell you a long term electricity plan, they are guaranteeing a rate for you while taking on the risk of price volitivity within the wholesale market. The retail electricity provider is not the company that delivers your electricity, however.
Electricity in Texas is delivered to end users by Transmission Distribution Utilities (TDUs). TDUs maintain the powerlines for a specific area and are responsible for keeping the power up.
