How are Mission Electricity Rates Set

Mission  electricity providers create their own energy plans.  Each plan contains its own formula that determines how much you pay each month based on your usage.   Your average electricity rate will be a result of how much you pay for your electricity divided by how many kWhs you use for the billing cycle.

As a result, even with so called “fixed rate” electricity plans, your effective electricity rate will change with each billing cycle depending on how many kWhs of electricity you used for the month.  Depending on your plan, your electric bill will have several different costs (or credits) that combine to give you your final amount due.

Here is one example of a typical Mission  electricity plan is structured. It will illustrate how your cost effects your electricity rate rather than the other way around.

This plan has five pricing elements:

  • Energy Rate = 5.80 ¢ per kWh
  • Base Charge = $7.95 per month
  • TDU Electric Delivery Charge = $3.42 per month
  • TDU Electric Delivery Charge = 3.697 ¢ per kWh
  • Credit for Billing cycle for usage greater than 2000 kWh = $40 per month

This plan has a combination of fixed fees (such as the $7.95 base charge) and per kWh charges.  This effects the math in such a way that your effective electricity rate will be less when you use more electricity and higher when you use less.

The “feature” in this plan is the $40 bill credit that kicks in if you use 2000 kWh or more.  This makes the plan look cheaper at 2000 kWh while at 1999 kWh the average electricity rate is much higher.

Here are the effective electricity rates for this plan based on how many kWhs of electricity are used for the billing cycle:

–              11.8¢/kWh @500 kWh
–              10.6¢/kWh @1000 kWh
–              10.1¢/kWh @1999 kWh
–              8.1¢/kWh @2000 kWh

That one extra kWh makes quite a difference in your rate!
