DFW and most of Texas is a “power to choose” market for electricity.  This puts the power in the hands of the consumers and puts pressure on electric companies to keep electricity rates low and to innovate with new types of electricity plans.

While all of this is great for the people who live in DFW, it can sometimes be a bit much when it comes to deciding on a provider.

Many people think it’s too much of a hassle or they don’t think they can actually save a lot of money. After all, 9¢ per kWh is only one cent cheaper than 10¢ per kWh.  Besides, “What the heck is a kWh anyway?”

A large home in DFW can easily use 2000 kWh of electricity per month (sometimes a lot more).  That one penny difference in price could represent a cost savings of $240 per year.

It’s not uncommon for the difference in price between the cheapest electricity rate in DFW and the most expensive rate to be 5, 6, or even 7 cents per kWh.

Choosing the wrong electric provider or plan can easily cost you over $1,000 per year!

That’s why it’s so important to shop around for an electricity provider.

Who Delivers and Distributes the Electricity in DFW?

The electricity provider you select is not the company that is actually responsible for delivering electricity to your home.  This is the job of the regional transmission & distribution utility in your area.  In DFW this utility is Oncor.  Oncor is responsible for maintaining the infrastructure, responding to power outages and making sure your electricity gets to you.

The electric company you select is called a retail electricity provider (REP) and it is responsible for buying electricity from the source and reselling it to you.  Your bill will include standard fees from Oncor.  These fees are the same for everyone in the Oncor delivery area no matter what REP they use.

This is good news because it means electricity providers aren’t competing on quality or reliability of service since they don’t even deliver your electricity.  They are just competing on price and, to a lesser extent, billing related customer service.

Tips For Comparing the Cheapest Electricity Rates

Before you begin comparing electricity rates, make sure you are looking at the correct rates.  Our electricity rate comparison tool allows you to select your home size.

Texas electricity plans are priced at three different usage levels.

If you live in an apartment, you will want to make sure you are looking at the 500 kWh rates.  If you live in a home, you will want to look at either the 1000 kWh or 2000 kWh rates depending on the size of your home or the amount of electricity you use in a typical month.

Not looking at the correct rates can cost you when your first light bill arrives.   The rate calculation formula for electricity plans are often finetuned to be cheapest at specific usage levels.

What Is the EFL on the Electricity Plans?

If you are shopping for electricity in Texas, you should become acquainted with the Electricity Facts Label (EFL).  Every plan has one.  This document strips away the marketing language and gives you all the relevant information about the plan you are considering.

Some Texas electricity plans are complicated in the way the rates are calculated.  The EFL will break down the formulas that are used to calculate your electricity rates.  Sometimes these formulas are straight forward and easy to understand.  Sometimes these formulas can be rather complicated.

As a rule of thumb, the more complicated the rate formula is the more likely you are to get a surprise when the bill arrives at the end of your first month.

Another red flag is a wide variation between the price at 2000 kWh and the price at 500 or 1000 kWh.  If the price at 2000 kWh is 5 cents lower than the price at 1000 kWh, then in all likelihood, the plan was designed to appear attractive at precisely that usage level.  If you use less than that for a month you might find yourself paying a lot more than you expected.
