Why Do the Temple Electric Providers Perform Credit Checks?
Retail electric providers tend to operate on thin margins. Keep in mind that when they provide electricity to homeowners and businesses, they must first procure this electricity from the power plants that generate the electricity. They have to pay for this power even if the end user fails to pay their electricity bill. If someone fails to pay their bill it results in a real dollar lose to the electric company.
Electric companies run soft credit checks on potential customers. Soft credit checks won’t affect your credit score. It helps electric companies determine the likelihood someone will pay their bill. If they feel there is a big enough chance that someone will fail to pay their bill, the company will ask for a deposit. This protects them from loses in the event that the customer fails to pay their bill after receiving electricity.

What are Temple Electricity Rates Made Up Of?
In Temple the electricity rate you pay almost always depends on how much electricity you use each month. This is true even for plans that are advertised as “fixed rate”.
Each electricity provider has the ability to charge however they want for the electricity plans they sell. The result is often a complicated mix of flat fees, per kWh fees, pass through fees, and bill credits. This results in an effective average electricity rate that moves around a lot.
Here is one example of a Temple electricity plan that has five different cost items in the formula that determines your electricity bill:
- Energy Rate = 5.80 ¢ per kWh
- Base Charge = $7.95 per month
- TDU Electric Delivery Charge = $3.42 per month
- TDU Electric Delivery Charge = 3.697 ¢ per kWh
- Credit for Billing cycle for usage greater than 2000 kWh = $40 per month
Notice that two of the items are flat fees. One is a base charge to your electricity provider of $7.95. The other is a charge for $3.42 per month. This one is a pass through cost from the transmission and distribution utility that delivers the power in your area. You will have to pay this charge regardless of who your electricity provider it is. Most companies break this out as a separate item in your bill. These two amounts will be the same on every bill. It doesn’t matter how much electricity you use.
The $40 bill credit is only applied if you use at least 2000kWh or more for the month.
The result of all this is that you can never really know what your electricity rate is going to be until you know exactly how much electricity you are going to use for the month. In this case the all in electricity rate for 2000kWhs turns out to be more than 3.5 cents per kWh cheaper than the average rate you would pay at 500 kWh usage.
