Tips for Comparing Electric Companies in Lake Dallas

The single most important thing you can do to make sure you get the cheapest electricity rate for your home is to make sure you are comparing the correct usage level.  Your actual average electricity rate depends, in most cases, on exactly how many kilowatt hours of electricity you use each month.

All Texas electricity providers are required to publish their electricity rates at three key usage levels.

If you live in an apartment, you should be looking at rates for 500 kWhs.  If you live in a house, the 1000 kWh or 2000 kWh rates are what you should look at.

If you don’t account for how much electricity you will be using, you could pick the wrong plan.  The company with the cheapest electricity rate at 2000 kWhs is rarely the same company with the best rate for 500 kWh.

Should I Be Concerned About the Cancellation Fees of the Electricity Plans?

Cancellation fees are a standard part of pretty much all electricity contracts sold in Texas.  You normally don’t have to pay this if you are moving out of your home.  You may need to contact your provider and let them know what your forwarding address is though.

A typical early termination fee for a 6 month plan is $75.  They get bigger if the contract term is longer.  Some companies will charge $20 per remaining month on your contract if you cancel it.
