Jasper-Newton Electric Cooperative

Jasper-Newton Electric Co-op is an electricity provider that delivers electricity to rural areas of five East Texas counties.  They boast 18,500 members, and they own and manage 3,225 miles of power lines, making them a good sized electric company.  They are a member of the Touchstone Energy Cooperative.

Jasper-Newton does not have any electricity-generating capabilities.  So how do they get the electricity they distribute?  They buy it on the wholesale open market.  JNEC buys the electricity, then they turn around and resell it with a markup added on.  Believe it or not, this is actually the standard business model of most Texas electric cooperatives.

JNEC does offer net metering to their customers, which is a nice offering.  The benefits of net metering are extensive, as it offers a benefit for both the consumers and the electric company. For those who have private solar panels installed on their property or businesses, they can sell any extra electricity they produce back to the grid.  While this is only possible during midday, it is a nice perk.

The website of Jasper-Newton Electric Cooperative is very outdated and sparse.  They could easily do an upgrade on it, especially considering they are a Touchstone Energy member.  On the other hand, they are very active on their Facebook page, which really helps them stay connected to their community.
