Sources of Electricity in The Colony

The Colony electric companies get their electricity primarily from three main types of power; fossil fuels, nuclear, and renewable power.

Fossil Fuels

Coal – Coal was once the primary source of electricity in Texas.  Today regulations, environmental concerns, and the dropping prices of other sources of power have led to a multiyear decline in coal as a source of electricity in The Colony and the rest of Texas.

Natural Gas – Natural gas is the preferred fuel for power plants that feed the Texas grid and provide power to The Colony.  Advances in fracking technology has led to an abundance of natural gas.  Natural gas is also a favorite source for electricity because it is easy to ramp up production at a power plant that uses natural gas.  This enables grid operators to quickly balance available electricity supply and demand on the grid.

Renewable Power

Wind Energy – Wind power is the main source of renewable power in Texas.  The majority of the state’s wind turbines are in west Texas.

Solar – Solar power is a fast growing source of renewable energy across Texas and specifically in The Colony.

Nuclear Power – Nuclear power accounts for less than 5% of the electricity capacity for the state of Texas.

Getting Started with New Electricity Service in The Colony

You need to have some information readily available for your enrollment.  You will need to make sure you have the full address where you are getting service.  In Texas, electric companies use something called an ESID to uniquely identify each service addresses.  The electricity company can almost always get this number by looking it up from the address you give them.  If they can’t find it, they may ask you for this information.  You should be able to find it on the last electric bill for your address.

You will be asked for a date when you want service to begin.   This would be the date you move in or the date you need the lights turned on.  If you are switching providers, select a date that aligns with the end of your current contract if you are under one.  If you aren’t under a contract, then just pick whatever date works for you.  The sooner the better if you are going to be saving money with your new plan.   Holidays and weekends may affect the dates that are available for service turn on.

You will also need to provide information that the company will use to run a credit check.  This will include either your driver’s license number or social security number.  Sometimes they will ask for a current of even a previous address.
