Why Do Brownwood Electric Companies Run Credit Checks?
Producing electricity requires a lot of infrastructure and capital. Power plants cost a lot of money to build and maintain. When electricity providers sell electricity to consumers, they must first buy this electricity from the owners of those capital assets.
Just like most other ventures that makes money selling a product, electric companies in Brownwood buy their product and resell this product on the retail market at a small profit on each kilowatt.
When a consumer fails to pay their light bill at month end, the company is not just out the electricity. They lose the money they had to spend to buy it.

That’s why they are so focused on making sure the people they enroll in an electricity plan pay their bills. The credit check helps lower their default rate when it comes to people paying their bills.
The credit check is referred to as a soft credit check and doesn’t impact your credit score. Depending on the result of the credit check, the company may require a customer to provide a deposit before they will turn on service.

What is an EFL?
The language used to market electricity plans in Texas can be slippery. But the EFL (Electricity Facts Label) is supposed to clarify exactly what the rates and fees attached to an electricity plan are.
For the most part, electricity providers in Texas are allowed to innovate by dreaming up electricity plans with many different pricing structures. The EFL is a standardized document that is meant to give consumers a way to compare electricity plans in a common format.
Items listed EFLs include:
- Per kWh costs
- Cancelation Fees
- Average electricity rates for 500, 1000, and 2000 kWhs
- Percentage of renewable energy included with the plan
- Descriptive language to clarify how electricity rates for the plan are calculated.
- TDU passthrough fees
- Flat fees
- Length of Contract
You will find a link to the EFL for every plan listed on Vault Electricity. Often the rates that are presented to the public don’t tell the whole story of what your actual costs may be. It is always a good idea to review the EFL before you decide to choose a plan.

Moving to Brownwood and Need a New Electricity Plan?
This city borders San Angelo and Abilene. It is the county seat of Brown County and has a population just under 19,000 total.
For entertainment, in and around the city, there are some great places for scenic sights. One of these spots is Lake Brownwood: it is the usual destination for those who love to fish, hike, picnic, or take their boat out on the water. In addition, one of the coolest things about Brownwood is the Brown County Museum of History. Here, one can learn the history of city, the Native American tribes indigenous to the geographical area, as well as see the old fashioned jail in town.
And speaking of history, during WWII, Brownwood was used as a camp for U.S. Army troops. At one point, there were about 80,000 troops total who resided in the area at one point. In extreme weather history, Brownwood was the site of an F-5 tornado which thankfully didn’t kill anyone, but injured about a dozen people.
Some additional information on the city: the majority of its inhabitants obtain degrees in psychology, business, and criminology. Howard Payne University holds the largest student body in Brown County. And, as is typical around the country, there are more females graduating with degrees than men.
I have to give a shout out to my alma mater located in Brownwood, Howard Payne University! Thanks again, Dr. Stanford.

What is the cheapest electricity provider in Brownwood?
The cheapest electricity provider in Brownwood is probably not who you think it is. There are over a dozen electric companies that sell power in Brownwood.
