How are Rio Grande Valley Electricity Bills Calculated?

Electricity rates in Rio Grande Valley are mostly the result of a rate formula rather than a straight rate for each kWh.  This means that even “fixed rate” electricity plans have rates that can change from month to month depending on how much power you use.  In order to understand this, you have to be willing to do a little math.

Here is an example of the pricing structure of a real Rio Grande Valley electricity plan recently offered.  It’s fairly representative of the type of plans sold by Rio Grande Valley electricity providers.

These fees were listed in their EFL disclosure document.

  • Energy Charge = $0.0486 per kWh
  • Monthly Service Fee = $9.95 per month (per billing cycle for usage less than 1000 kWh)
  • TDU Delivery Charge = $5.47 per month
  • TDU Delivery Charge = $0.040716 per kWh

Let’s apply this rate formula to the typical usage pattern of an average Texas electricity consumer who averages 1200 kWh per month.  As every Texan knows, summers are hot, and the A/C is on almost all the time.  Springs and falls can be mild, and winters are highly unpredictable.

All of this means that an average 1200 kWh per month customer can use as much as 1800 kWh in August and as little as 800 in April.  December could go either way.

With this plan, if you use 800 kWh in April your electricity bill will be $86.87 and your average electricity rate will be 10.9¢.

In August, if you use 1800 kWh, your total bill will be $166.24 which results in an average electricity rate of 9.2¢.

Fascinating Facts on the Rio Grande Valley

The Rio Grande Valley section of Texas lies geographically just north of Mexico, near the southernmost portion of Texas. There are four counties which lie within this valley next to the Rio Grande River: Cameron, Hidalgo, Starr, and Willacy. Demographers have measured it to be one of the quickest growing regions in the country; there are more than 1,300,000 people total constituting the area with major cities Weslaco, McAllen Pharr, Rio Grande City, and San Juan being some of the major cities.

The climate can be pretty harsh with extremes at both ends of the spectrum: heat and cold. And more often than not, the heat can rise to triple digits. This is much more frequent than freezing temperatures. And because it lies so close to the Gulf Coast, the tropical fronts can bring a lot of hurricanes and lesser storms. And because of its flat terrain, there are increased risks for floods in the valley.

Some great places to visit in the Rio Grande Valley are the Port Isabel Lighthouse, South Padre Island, Santa Ana National Wildlife Refuge, and for those with a passport, Mexico is always a great place to experience as well.

Rio Grande Valley Green Energy Electricity Plans

Renewable energy plans are more common than they have ever been in Texas.  Many Rio Grande Valley, TX electric companies offer at least one plan that consists of 100% renewable energy sources.  This is driven by growing consumer demand for green energy.  This is the result of consumers wanting to be more ecofriendly.  At the same time electricity rates for renewable energy plans have gone down relative to the cost of traditional energy plans.  There is now very little difference in price between the cheapest green energy plan and the average traditional electricity plan.
