Sources of Cameron Electricity

Traditionally, coal was the primary fuel for generating electricity in Texas.  Today, Cameron and the rest of the state gets less than one fourth of their electricity from coal burning power plants.  Regulations, environmental concerns and cheaper alternatives have steadily chipped away at the use of coal as a source for generating electricity in Texas.

Wind energy today is major contributor to the electricity grid that provides power to the homes and businesses of Cameron, TX.  Wind has now passed coal as the second leading single source of Texas electricity.  Technology and economies of scale have steadily brought down the price of wind generated electricity so that it is now closer to price parity with fossil fuel sources of power.

Natural gas now produces over half of all Cameron electricity.  Natural gas is abundant and easier than ever to access using new fracking techniques.   Texas is the largest producer of natural gas in the United States.  Almost every new fossil fuel power plant built in Texas for some time has used natural gas as a fuel source.  The low cost of natural gas has helped keep electricity prices down for the state of Texas over the past decade.

100% green energy plans are now a popular choice among consumers in Cameron.  Green plans are often as cheap as the traditional alternatives.

No Deposit Electricity In Cameron

If you are reading this, you’ve probably been told you have to pay a deposit by one or more electric company.   This is very common in Texas where electric companies routinely run credit checks before the will turn on service.  There are a few ways you might be able to avoid paying that large deposit.

Every Texas electricity provider is free to have their own credit requirements.  But they are required by the PUC to offer a deposit waiver for certain customers.  If you have been asked to pay a deposit by one electricity provider, you can always try another one.  Based on their own requirements, the second company could offer you a no deposit electricity plan or they could require for a smaller amount.

If you fall into any of these categories, you may be eligible to avoid a deposit:

  • You are 65 years or older and not behind in payment with another electric provider
  • Are medically indigent
  • You are a victim of family violence
  • Or you have recent history (past 24 months) of on-time payment with another electric provider

If any of these apply to you, you will have to provide proof to the electric company to obtain your waiver.

Currently, the citizens are a pretty diverse crowd with Caucasian, Hispanic, and African American all making up the city’s relatively balanced collection of people. About 10% of those people have a Bachelor’s degree or more.

The average high temperatures throughout the calendar year range from the upper national averages to above the average during the winter months. Tornadoes, like most Texas cities, are frequent in Cameron.

When to Renew Your Electricity Contract

You should start looking out for a new electricity plan a couple of months before your current plan expires.  If you find a rate that is too good to pass up, you can enroll in a plan with a start date up to 60 days in the future with some providers.

Your current provider will begin emailing you or sending you letters asking you to sign up for a new plan.  You should compare the rates they are offering with rates being offered by other companies before you take them up on the offer.

You’ll want to avoid simply letting the plan elapse without getting on a new one.  You might end up on a variable month-to-month plan and you will likely end up paying a higher rate than you should.
